Navigating the Future: Catholic Church Synod Seeks Reflection and Connection
The Catholic Church is embarking on a unique and innovative journey to address the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and growing divisions within communities. Through a process of reflection and connection, the Church is holding a synod to invite individuals to share their experiences and hopes for the future.
This multi-year consultation aims to renew the diocese and strengthen the Church by improving dialogue, promoting healing, and fostering inclusion and participation. The University of San Diego has played a role in this process by hosting listening sessions where participants could share their thoughts on the Church in a safe and non-judgmental space.
Using a unique methodology, participants were asked important questions about their experiences with the Catholic Church and given the opportunity to share their responses with the group using a talking piece. The insights gathered from these sessions will be compiled into a report and sent to the Vatican to inform future teachings and approaches within the Church.
Director of University Ministry, Christian Santa Maria, describes the experience as refreshing and filled with tenderness, highlighting the importance of listening and coming together as a community. This synod represents a new way forward for the Church, emphasizing the power of encounter and dialogue in addressing the challenges of today.
