Addressing Humanity’s Urgent Challenges: Homelessness Action Week at the University of San Diego
The University of San Diego is taking a proactive approach to addressing humanity’s urgent challenges, particularly in the realm of homelessness and housing insecurity. The upcoming Homelessness Action Week, scheduled for Nov. 7–11, will provide a platform for discussion, engagement, and activism on these critical issues.
Throughout the week, a series of events will be held to raise awareness and promote action. The lineup includes a film screening of “Break and Enter,” a documentary about activists in 1970s New York fighting homelessness, followed by a discussion led by Dr. Odilka Santiago. Additionally, there will be a program where USD students and University Ministry staff will prepare and share dinner with residents at Rachel’s Night Shelter, providing an opportunity for meaningful encounters and learning.
Community Conversations on Wednesday will offer a space for learning about the realities of homelessness in San Diego, while the Homelessness and Housing Insecurity Research Summit on Thursday will showcase research projects on policing, evictions, and shelters in the area. The week will conclude with a workshop on tenants’ rights, led by community advocates from the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.
All events will be held in-person or virtually, with meals provided for attendees. To learn more and get involved, visit the Urgent Challenges Collective event website.
