Deacon David Keene: Preserving Relics and Exhuming Saints’ Remains

Deacon David Keene, a canon lawyer and expert in the exhumation of human remains, has played a crucial role in preserving the relics of saints for veneration. His work has not only involved the exhumation of the remains of Venerable Father Augustus Tolton and Father Patrick Ryan, but also sheds light on the rich history of the church in preserving human remains.

In a recent interview with editor Joyce Duriga, Deacon Keene discussed the church’s history of preserving relics of saints and the exhumation of Father Tolton. He highlighted how the early church would set up shrines at the burial sites of martyrs, and how relics were distributed to various churches and shrines for veneration as Christianity spread through Europe.

Despite questions about the relevance of relic preservation in the 21st century, Deacon Keene emphasized the importance of relics in the canonization process and their role in healing. He explained that relics are not talismans or charms, but the actual remains of individuals that should be respected and treated with reverence.

Deacon Keene also shared a humorous anecdote about how he was recruited to exhume Father Tolton’s remains, showcasing the unexpected paths that led him to his unique expertise. He discussed the meticulous process of exhumation and the emotional experience of uncovering Father Tolton’s remains, expressing a deep personal connection to the saint.

Overall, Deacon Keene’s work highlights the significance of preserving relics in the Catholic tradition and the profound impact of exhumation on those involved in the process. His dedication to this work serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of saints and the importance of honoring their remains with reverence and respect.
