Socktober 2023: Uniting Students Through Soccer for Global Social Justice
Students across Australia are gearing up to kick goals for a good cause as Catholic Mission launches its Socktober 2023 campaign. The initiative, which aims to raise awareness about global poverty, particularly for young children, through the power of soccer, is set to make a big impact this year.
With the FIFA Women’s World Cup captivating audiences worldwide, Socktober 2023 seeks to remind students and their families that not all children have the same opportunities. The campaign lead, Matt Poynting, highlights the importance of understanding the struggles faced by children in places like Venilale, Timor-Leste, where poverty, health crises, and trauma are still prevalent.
Last year, Socktober raised over $612,000 for projects in Ethiopia and beyond. This year, the focus is on supporting the community of Venilale, Timor-Leste, where missionaries are working tirelessly to create sustainable change. Students and educators are encouraged to get involved and make a difference.
Catholic Mission’s resources, including Mission Packs, are available to schools participating in Socktober 2023. These educational materials are designed to deepen students’ understanding of social justice issues and inspire them to contribute to positive change in the world.
The Socktober 2023 website is now live, providing a platform for students and schools to join the cause. To learn more about how to get involved and become a Socktober Star, visit socktober.org.au. Let’s kick poverty to the curb and make a difference together!
