Pope Francis Approves Canonization and Beatification Decrees: Foundress of Oblates of the Holy Spirit and Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War
The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis has approved the canonization of the foundress of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, Elena Guerra, as well as the beatification of a priest and a layman who were martyred during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
Elena Guerra, a noblewoman from Lucca, Italy, lived between 1835 and 1914. Despite opposition from her family, she founded the Congregation of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, also known as the “Sisters of Saint Zita,” in 1882. The congregation focused on the cultural and religious education of youth. Pope John XXIII declared her Blessed in 1959, and now she is set to be declared a Saint.
The two martyrs from Spain, Gaetano Clausellas Ballvé and Antonio Tort Reixachs, were killed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War for openly challenging anti-Christian sentiments. Gaetano, a diocesan priest, was shot by militiamen, while Antonio, a layman and father of 11 children, was tortured and shot near the Montcada cemetery. Both men showed great devotion to their faith and paid the ultimate price for it.
The Decrees approved by Pope Francis also recognize the heroic virtues of Servant of God, Teresa Lanfranco, who died in Rome in 1989. Teresa, originally from Gallipoli, Italy, joined an institute of religious life dedicated to the parish apostolate and the formation of young women. She played a crucial role in mediating disputes within the community and had a special devotion to St. Joseph.
These stories of faith, courage, and sacrifice highlight the extraordinary witness of these individuals and serve as an inspiration to believers around the world. The official ceremonies for the canonization and beatification are yet to be announced, but the Catholic community eagerly awaits the opportunity to honor these new saints and blesseds.
