Profile of Rev. Mr. Bernard Ekeagwu: A Journey to Priesthood
Rev. Mr. Bernard Ekeagwu: From Ping-Pong Champion to Priest
On May 18, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will welcome a new priest, Transitional Deacon Bernard Okechukwu Ekeagwu, into its ranks. Ekeagwu’s journey to the priesthood is a unique one, shaped by his upbringing in Imo State, Nigeria, and his passion for sports.
Born in 1993 to Sir Patrick and Lady Esther Ekeagwu, Ekeagwu was raised in a devout Catholic family as one of eight children. Growing up with five competitive brothers, Ekeagwu developed a love for ping-pong, a sport that he excelled in alongside his siblings. This love for sports extended to tennis, where he won medals in both singles and doubles competitions in Nigeria.
Ekeagwu’s educational journey was also deeply rooted in his faith, attending Catholic schools and seminaries throughout his youth. After studying philosophy and theology in Nigeria, he continued his studies at Villanova University in the United States, where he found a home parish at Saint Colman Catholic Church in Ardmore.
It was at Saint Colman’s that Ekeagwu felt a calling to the priesthood and reached out to Father Stephen DeLacy, expressing his interest. Now, five years later, Ekeagwu is preparing for his priestly ordination, with his first Mass scheduled at his home parish on May 19.
Throughout his journey, Ekeagwu’s favorite saints, Saint Patrick and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, have been sources of inspiration for him. He credits Saint Patrick for bringing Christianity to Nigeria and shaping his own faith.
As Ekeagwu looks forward to his ordination, he offers advice to young men considering the priesthood, encouraging them to nurture their desire and seek guidance from those who can help them discern their calling.
Ekeagwu’s story is a testament to the diverse paths that lead individuals to the priesthood, showcasing how faith, family, and personal passions can intersect to shape a life dedicated to serving others.
