Thousands Gather in Sydney to Welcome Saint Charbel’s Replica Tomb and Relics
On May 8, 2024, a momentous event took place in Sydney, Australia, as over 10,000 people gathered to welcome the arrival of Saint Charbel’s replica tomb and an extract of his relics to their new home at Saint Charbel’s Church in Punchbowl. With more than 33,000 healing miracles attributed to Saint Charbel, the installation of the second shrine in the world dedicated to this renowned saint marks a significant milestone for the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Australia.
The event was a solemn and awe-inspiring occasion, with thousands of devotees braving the rain and cold to participate in a half-mile procession through the streets of Punchbowl. The 240-pound replica of Saint Charbel’s tomb, carried by over 70 pallbearers, featured a first-class relic of the saint, his bone, and a replica of his body dressed in priestly robes. The streets were filled with the fragrance of incense and the sound of prayers and hymns as the procession made its way to the newly constructed sanctuary.
Maronite Bishop of Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania, Antoine-Charbel Tarabay, presided over the event and emphasized the significance of Saint Charbel’s presence in Australia. The Reverend Father Anthony El-Kazzi also spoke about the importance of the occasion, highlighting Saint Charbel’s piety, humility, and miraculous intercession.
Saint Charbel, born in 1828 in Lebanon, lived a life of solitude and prayer, dedicated to the Maronite traditions of the monastic life. After his death in 1898, his body was found to be perfectly preserved, and reports of miracles and cures attributed to his intercession have continued to this day.
The arrival of Saint Charbel’s replica tomb and relics in Sydney is a testament to the enduring legacy of this humble monk and his miraculous deeds. As the faithful gathered to welcome this sacred relic, they were reminded of the power of faith and the boundless love of the Creator. The event serves as a reminder to all to seek true liberation and peace in Christ alone, following the example of Saint Charbel in simplicity, silence, and deep humility.
