“Iconographer Jeremy Alexander Creates Mural of Diverse Saints at Detroit Cristo Rey High School Chapel”
Iconographer and theology teacher Jeremy Alexander has brought new life to the chapel at Detroit Cristo Rey High School with a stunning mural featuring 37 diverse saints, artists, poets, civil rights leaders, and human rights activists. The mural, painted in Alexander’s signature Byzantine style, was completed just in time for All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1.
The idea for the mural came about when Kim Redigan, director of campus ministry at Cristo Rey, noticed that the view from the chapel had been obstructed by industrial-sized air-conditioning units. Wanting to restore the beauty and vibrancy of the space, Redigan and Alexander decided that a mural would be the perfect solution.
Alexander, who had taught himself the art of iconography, began work on the mural in mid-July. Starting with a drawing of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, he gradually added more figures to create a representation of the communion of saints. The mural includes a diverse range of individuals, from canonized saints to those who are considered saints in the hearts of the community.
Throughout the painting process, students and faculty members stopped by the chapel to pray and reflect, finding solace in the evolving artwork. Alexander, who sees the mural as a gift to the community that supported him during a difficult time, hopes that it will inspire all who visit the chapel.
The mural was blessed by Jesuit Father Trevor Rainwater on All Saints’ Day, and since then, it has become a focal point for prayer and reflection for students and visitors alike. Alexander’s hope is that the stories of the individuals depicted in the mural will serve as a reminder that holiness is attainable for everyone, regardless of the time period or background.
As the vibrant mural continues to inspire those who encounter it, Alexander’s gift to the Cristo Rey community stands as a testament to the power of art and faith to bring people together in prayer and reflection.
