Councillor Robert Rigby Elected as New Mayor of Westminster: A Man of Faith and Community Engagement

Councillor Robert Rigby Elected as New Mayor of Westminster, Embracing Catholic Faith and Community Values

In a historic decision on Wednesday, May 15, Councillor Robert Rigby was elected as the new Mayor of Westminster, bringing with him a deep-rooted connection to his Catholic faith and Benedictine values. Rigby, who attended Ampleforth College alongside his family members, credits his formative years for instilling in him the importance of “listening” and “humility,” values that have guided his public and personal life.

As an active Catholic, Rigby emphasized the role his faith plays in shaping his daily life and values, which he believes will be invaluable during his mayoral tenure. With over 500 commitments and engagement with thousands of diverse individuals ahead of him, Rigby is ready to lead Westminster with a strong foundation of faith and community values.

Father Christopher Colven, the Catholic chaplain for the Houses of Parliament, will serve as Rigby’s chaplain, further highlighting the Mayor’s commitment to his faith and community. Rigby, who has represented the Regent’s Park ward in Westminster since 2010, has made significant contributions in various areas such as planning, finance, regeneration, and community engagement.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Mayor, Rigby stated, “It is a profound honor and privilege to assume this position. Westminster is a unique, multicultural city, and I am eager to support and engage with our vibrant communities throughout my mayoral year.”

In his new role, Mayor Rigby has chosen to champion two charities: the Cardinal Hume Centre, which supports homeless youth, and the MCC Foundation, which promotes cricket participation across diverse communities. Rigby’s dedication to these causes reflects his commitment to supporting and uplifting those in need within the community.

With a career in sales and marketing within the travel industry, Rigby has also been an active member of the Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, participating in various running events. During the Mayor Making ceremony, Rigby shared his plans to promote fitness and sports among youth, highlighting initiatives such as the Daily Mile in primary schools and the Westminster Mile event in September.

As he embarks on his historic term as Mayor of Westminster, Rigby’s faith, community values, and dedication to promoting health and sports among youth will undoubtedly shape his leadership and engagement with the diverse communities of Westminster.
