Seeking Support for Canonization of Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM: A Call to Action
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, a day that forever changed the world. Among the many heroes who emerged on that tragic day was Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM, a gay priest who served as the chaplain for the New York City Fire Department. Fr. Judge selflessly offered his life to minister to victims and first responders at the World Trade Center in Manhattan, where he ultimately lost his life.
Fr. Judge’s story has gained widespread recognition, with a documentary titled “The Saint of 9/11” shedding light on his life and ministry. Known for his decades of service in parish and campus ministry, outreach to the homeless, support for the LGBTQ community, and compassionate care for those with HIV/AIDS, Fr. Judge’s legacy has touched countless lives.
In light of his exemplary life and sacrificial death, there is a growing call for the Catholic Church to officially recognize Fr. Mychal Judge as a saint through canonization. New Ways Ministry, a Catholic LGBTQ organization, is spearheading efforts to form an association dedicated to promoting Fr. Judge’s cause for sainthood.
Individuals and organizations are invited to join this coalition to support the research and fundraising needed for the canonization process. While New Ways Ministry will facilitate the formation of this group, the newly-formed association will take the lead in advancing Fr. Judge’s cause for sainthood.
The push for Fr. Judge’s canonization has gained momentum in recent years, with the Vatican expressing interest in his case. Despite initial challenges in finding a sponsor for the research, there is renewed hope in the possibility of Fr. Judge being officially recognized as a saint.
As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, let us honor the memory of Fr. Mychal Judge and his selfless dedication to serving others. Through the establishment of an association dedicated to his cause, we can work towards seeing this beloved priest recognized as a saint. St. Mychal Judge, pray for us.
