Good Shepherd Village: A New Affordable Housing Development in Happy Valley
Catholic Charities of Oregon Completes 143 New Affordable Homes in Happy Valley
In a groundbreaking move to address the affordable housing crisis in the Portland suburb of Happy Valley, Catholic Charities of Oregon has completed the construction of 143 new affordable homes. Thanks to $18.3 million in Metro Affordable Housing Bond funds and other public and private grants and investments, the Good Shepherd Village development is now open to residents.
This development marks a significant milestone as it is the first regulated affordable housing project within the city limits of Happy Valley. The Good Shepherd Village offers a variety of housing options, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Notably, 35 units are designated as permanent supportive housing (PSH) for individuals who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness, with a special focus on at-risk veterans.
Residents of the Good Shepherd Village will benefit from convenient access to public transit, grocery stores, schools, a public library, parks, and healthcare facilities. The property also features communal spaces such as a large community room, quiet reflection areas, play areas, garden beds, and an outdoor kitchen/cooking area, all designed to enhance the quality of life for residents.
To welcome new residents to their homes, Catholic Charities of Oregon provided “welcome home kits” that include essential items and personal notes from donors. The project was made possible through the support of the Metro Regional Housing Bond approved by voters in 2018, as well as collaboration with community engagement partners such as Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO) and El Programa Hispano Católico.
The Good Shepherd Village development is a testament to Catholic Charities of Oregon’s commitment to providing affordable housing solutions. This project follows their participation in CCUSA’s Healthy Housing Initiative, with the successful completion of the Cathedral Village apartments in Portland’s Cathedral Park neighborhood.
