Creative Ways to Give Alms During Lent

As Catholics around the world prepare for the Lenten season, the call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving remains as important as ever. Almsgiving, in particular, is a key pillar of Lenten practice, but in these unprecedented times, it may seem challenging for many to give back.

Beth Knobbe, a community engagement manager at Catholic Relief Services, reminds us that almsgiving is ultimately an act of trust in God’s abundance and generosity. Despite the financial challenges brought on by the pandemic, Knobbe encourages us to remember that everything we own is a gift from God, and that we can find freedom in giving back.

Michal Horace, director of the young adult initiative at St. Meinrad Archabbey and Seminary and School of Theology, emphasizes the importance of finding creative ways to give alms during Lent, even in the midst of physical separation from the church. Whether it’s shopping for the elderly, forgoing a meal out and donating the money saved, or volunteering time and talent to nonprofit organizations, there are still plenty of opportunities to serve our communities safely.

Horace suggests reading the book “What to Do When Jesus is Hungry: A Practical Guide to the Works of Mercy” for practical ways to apply Jesus’ teachings in today’s world. Additionally, organizations like Catholic Relief Services are adapting to the times by offering virtual opportunities for giving, such as their Rice Bowl program.

For those struggling to find ways to give alms this Lent, Knobbe reminds us of the importance of entering into solidarity with those who are truly in need. Despite the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in, the mission of the church remains the same – to serve others with love and compassion.

As we navigate this Lenten season in a new normal, let us remember the importance of almsgiving and find creative ways to give back to those in need.
