Exploring the Year of St. Joseph: A Journey of Faith and Devotion

Pope Francis Declares Year of St. Joseph: A Closer Look at the Life and Devotion to the Patriarch

In a move that has brought the faithful closer to the figure of St. Joseph, Pope Francis declared a Year of St. Joseph, set to end on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This decision was made on the occasion of the sesquicentennial of the proclamation of St. Joseph as patron of the universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870.

The Roman Pontiff highlighted the different roles of St. Joseph in his Apostolic Letter Patris corde, describing him as a father in love, tenderness, obedience, welcome, creative courage, work, and shadows. The name Joseph itself means “he will increase,” signifying the growth and addition of divine dimensions to his holy life.

St. Joseph’s role as the earthly father of Jesus was marked by an annunciation parallel to that of Mary, as he received angelic messages in dreams. Despite doubts that some have interpreted as jealousy, St. Joseph’s sanctity and righteousness were unquestionable, as affirmed by the Evangelist St. Matthew.

Devotion to St. Joseph has been a longstanding tradition, with the faithful entrusting themselves to his intercessory power. Confraternities of St. Joseph exist in Spain and Latin America, reflecting the widespread devotion to the saint. Pope Francis himself has expressed his deep love for St. Joseph, seeking his intercession in times of need.

St. Joseph is also revered as the patron saint of the good death and the hidden life, embodying humility and sanctification of ordinary work. His silent presence and obedience to God’s will serve as a model for believers seeking to live a life of faith and devotion.

In the Eucharistic sacrifice, St. Joseph’s role is seen in his spiritual presence alongside Mary and Jesus, offering a model of family life and devotion. His participation in the Sacrifice of his Son and his peaceful death underscore his exceptional holiness and closeness to the divine.

As we reflect on the life and devotion to St. Joseph during this Year dedicated to him, we are reminded of his exemplary virtues and his crucial role in the Holy Family. Through prayer and devotion to St. Joseph, believers seek his guidance and protection, following his example of faith and humility.
