Father Alex Echeandia Loro Shares Love for Iconography at Saint Louis Priory School

Father Alex Echeandia Loro, a Benedictine monk and master iconographer from Peru, recently shared his love for iconography with students at Saint Louis Priory School in Creve Coeur. Father Alex, who has taught iconography workshops all over the world, visited the school at the invitation of headmaster Father Cuthbert Elliott, OSB.

During the weeklong workshop, participants learned the ancient art of icon writing and created their own handcrafted icon of Christ Pantocrator, a representation of Christ as an all-powerful ruler. Father Alex emphasized the spiritual aspects of iconography, noting that the process of creating an icon can deepen one’s prayer life.

The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, including teachers, parishioners, and even a director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Each participant found the experience to be a lesson in patience and a way to express their faith through art.

Father Alex’s dedication to iconography stems from his belief that icons serve as windows or doors to the divine, allowing individuals to enter into the mystery of faith through contemplation. He hopes that his workshops not only teach the technical skills of icon writing but also inspire a deeper connection to the spiritual truths represented in the icons.

Overall, the workshop at Saint Louis Priory School was a transformative experience for all involved, highlighting the beauty and significance of iconography as a form of prayer and reflection. Father Alex’s passion for sharing this ancient art form continues to inspire and enrich communities around the world.
