Rwandan couple killed in genocide moves closer to canonization
The inspiring story of a married couple killed at the start of the 1994 Rwandan genocide is now one step closer to canonization. Cyprien and Daphrose Rugumba, known for their humanitarian efforts and work with the Emmanuel Community, may become the first Rwandans declared to be saints.
Cyprien, a successful artist and poet, had a tumultuous marriage with Daphrose, a devout Catholic who prayed for his conversion despite his initial disbelief. After a near-death experience in 1982, Cyprien underwent a radical conversion and dedicated his life to Christ, becoming a devoted husband and servant.
In 1989, the couple founded a chapter of the Emmanuel Community in Rwanda, promoting unity in Christ amidst growing ethnic tensions. Tragically, on the first day of the 1994 genocide, Cyprien and Daphrose, along with six of their children, were murdered in their home after spending the night in Eucharistic Adoration.
Their canonization cause was opened in 2015, and the recent conclusion of the diocesan inquiry brings them one step closer to sainthood. Their story serves as a testament to faith, love, and sacrifice in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
