Funeral of 60-Year-Old Man Found Shot Dead in Co Tyrone: Son Charged with Murder
The small village of Augher in Co Tyrone was filled with sorrow and disbelief this week as the community gathered to say goodbye to 60-year-old Aloysius Hackett, who was found shot dead at his home just five days prior. The emotional funeral was attended by family, friends, and supporters, but one person was notably absent – his youngest son, Sean, who has been charged with his murder.
Despite the serious allegations against him, Sean was granted temporary release to attend his father’s funeral, a decision made in accordance with his family’s wishes. Chaperoned by Tyrone boss Mickey Harte and his solicitor Adrian O’Kane, Sean did not speak to family members as ordered by the court.
As Sean arrived at St Macartan’s Church for the midday service, a placard of support greeted him, reading “We’re all thinking of you Sean.” The church was packed to capacity, with mourners spilling outside and GAA officials helping direct traffic to the rural location.
Inside the church, the coffin draped in an Augher GAA jersey was carried by relatives, including Mr. Hackett’s other sons, Kevin and Conor. A guard of honor was formed by officials and players from St Macartan’s GAA club, reflecting the family’s strong ties to the community.
During the service, Chief celebrant Fr Michael McCaughey prayed for the Hackett family and expressed the community’s shock and sadness over the tragedy. After the private burial service, Sean was escorted back to Hydebank Young Offenders’ Centre, where he is being held.
The death of Mr. Hackett has left the rural Tyrone community reeling, with many still trying to come to terms with the loss. The circumstances surrounding his death, and the subsequent arrest of his son, have left many unanswered questions and a sense of disbelief in the close-knit village of Augher.
