Celebrating the Fourth Centenary of the Canonization of St. Isidore Labrador

The Archdiocese of Madrid is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone in the history of the Church – the fourth centenary of the canonization of five saints by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. Among the saints honored on that day were St. Philip Neri, St. Teresa of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Isidore Labrador.

The news of the canonization spread among the Italians, sparking some envy as four of the saints were Spaniards and only one was Italian. However, the significance of the event cannot be understated, especially considering the lasting impact these saints have had on the Church over the centuries.

In honor of this momentous occasion, the Holy See has granted the Archdiocese of Madrid a Jubilee Year of St. Isidore, which will run from May 15, 2022, to May 15, 2023. This Jubilee Year will coincide with other major celebrations taking place around March 12, including a special Eucharist presided over by Pope Francis in Rome.

St. Isidore Labrador, a humble farmer from Madrid, has been venerated for centuries for his holiness, devotion to God, and love for the poor. His incorrupt body is kept and venerated in Madrid, serving as a powerful reminder of his sanctity and the resurrection promised by the Lord.

As the faithful prepare to celebrate this Jubilee Year, they are reminded of the enduring legacy of St. Isidore and the lessons he can teach us today. In a society in need of models of family life, work ethic, and simplicity, St. Isidore’s example shines brightly, offering hope and inspiration to all who seek to live a life of holiness and devotion to God.

The Jubilee Year of St. Isidore Labrador promises to be a time of reflection, prayer, and celebration as the faithful come together to honor this beloved saint and seek his intercession for the challenges of today.
