Clark Bates Awarded PhD in Theology and Religion from University of Birmingham
The Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing at the University of Birmingham is celebrating the recommendation of Clark Bates for the award of a PhD. Clark, a doctoral student in Theology and Religion on the AHRC Midlands4Cities program, has made significant contributions to the field with his thesis on the Greek manuscripts of Ephesians.
Clark’s thesis, which includes the first-ever critical text, translation, and theological commentary of the ancient exegetical compilation, has garnered praise from his examiners and supervisors. Professor Paul Foster and Professor Andrew Davies served as his examiners, while Professor Hugh Houghton, Dr. Catherine Smith, and Professor Richard Bell supervised his work.
The thesis, titled “The Pseudo-Oecumenian Catena on Ephesians: Text, Translation, and Commentary,” delves into the production and purpose of the Ps.- Oecumenian catena on Ephesians through a critical edition, translation, and theological commentary. Clark’s meticulous research involved the transcription and collation of seventeen catena manuscripts, shedding new light on this important text.
Throughout his time at Birmingham, Clark has been actively involved in various projects and initiatives, including the CATENA project and the organization of an international workshop on ‘Decentralising the Biblical Text’. His dedication to scholarship and his commitment to advancing the understanding of ancient texts have been evident in his work.
After the graduation ceremonies this summer, Clark’s thesis will be available on the University of Birmingham eTheses portal, and his data will be released on the eData repository. Clark is looking forward to pursuing postdoctoral work in Italy, furthering his research and contributing to the academic community.
Clark’s achievement is a testament to his hard work and dedication to his field, and his success serves as an inspiration to aspiring scholars in the field of Theology and Religion. Congratulations to Clark Bates on this well-deserved recognition of his outstanding academic accomplishments.
