Diocese of Laoag Opens Cause for Beatification and Canonization of Niña Ruiz Abad

The Diocese of Laoag in the northern Philippines has taken a significant step towards potentially declaring a local girl, Niña Ruiz Abad, a saint. The diocesan phase of the cause of beatification and canonization of Abad was officially opened at the St. William the Hermit Cathedral in Laoag City on April 7, 2024.

Abad, who passed away at the young age of 13, is described as having lived a prayerful life full of reverence. The Diocese of Laoag initiated the process to investigate her life and determine if she exhibited the virtues necessary for sainthood.

Bishop Renato Mayugba of Laoag expressed the importance of examining Abad’s life to see if she was indeed blessed with sanctity by God. The diocesan phase involves compiling her writings, gathering testimonies about her holiness, and other aspects of her life.

Archbishop Marlo Peralta of Nueva Segovia emphasized that the timeline for Abad’s beatification or canonization is in God’s hands. However, he highlighted that Abad can serve as a model of Christian living for others.

Abad, who was diagnosed with a heart condition at a young age, displayed behaviors that were considered unusual for someone her age. She was known for her strong devotion to prayer, the Holy Trinity, and the Holy Eucharist. Her motto “God first” became well-known among her peers.

Despite her young age, Abad was seen as a model of charity, always willing to help others and show kindness to everyone around her. Her life story has inspired many, leading to the official opening of her cause for sainthood.

The next steps in the process involve submitting the diocesan inquiry documentation to the Vatican Congregation for Saints’ Causes for review. If Abad is deemed to have led a heroic life of Christian virtues, she may be bestowed with the title “venerable” by the Church.

Abad’s potential path to sainthood is a significant development for the Northern Luzon region, as she would be the second candidate from the area to be considered for sainthood. Her story serves as a reminder of the power of faith and devotion, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.
