Celebrating the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Today, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. These three siblings from the household of Bethany shared a special bond with the Lord Jesus, who loved them dearly. Martha, known for her hospitality and service, welcomed Jesus into her home. Mary, on the other hand, sat at Jesus’ feet, listening attentively to his teachings. And Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus, bore witness to the power of the One who conquered death.

In the past, there was uncertainty in the Latin Church regarding the identity of Mary, which led to Martha being celebrated alone on July 29. However, recent studies have clarified this, and now all three siblings are honored together on this day. Pope Francis, recognizing their significant witness in welcoming Jesus, has decreed that July 29 be designated as the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus in the General Roman Calendar.

The lives of these saints serve as an inspiration for believers to lead better lives and imitate their deeds. The example of Martha’s active service, Mary’s attentive listening, and Lazarus’ miraculous resurrection remind us of the importance of hospitality, contemplation, and faith in Christ.

On this day, the Church also commemorates the martyrs Sts. Simplicius, Faustinus, Beatrice, and Rufus, who gave their lives for Christ in Rome in the year 303. Their courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by early Christians for their faith.

As we honor these saints today, let us reflect on their virtues and seek to emulate their dedication to Christ. Whether through acts of service like Martha, contemplation like Mary, or faith like Lazarus, may we be inspired to live out our faith in our daily lives.
