“Radically Black and Authentically Catholic: A Journey of Faith with Dr. Ansel Augustine”
The Saint Michael’s community was captivated by a thought-provoking discussion on February 20, titled “Radically Black and Authentically Catholic — A Journey of Faith,” led by Dr. Ansel Augustine, Director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The event, held in the Farrell Room, drew in students, faculty, and members of the community eager to hear Augustine’s personal experiences within the church.
As a new member of the Saint Michael’s College Board of Trustees and soon to join the Bishops Conference, Augustine shared his gratitude towards Fr. David Theroux and the Edmundites for their role in shaping his spiritual journey. Augustine credited the Edmundites for guiding him towards a deeper connection with his faith, especially during his time at Xavier University, a historically Black college.
With a background in teaching and ministry spanning over 20 years, Augustine emphasized the importance of promoting intercultural competence within communities and educating others about Black Catholicism. His award-winning book, Leveling the Praying Field: Can the Church We Love, Love Us Back?, delves into issues of race and inequality within the church, sparking important conversations about the challenges faced by future generations in maintaining their connection to the church.
During the interactive session, Augustine engaged the audience with questions about Black history in Catholicism, including a surprising revelation about the number of African popes in history. The lively Q&A format allowed for a dynamic exchange of ideas and showcased Augustine’s passion for faith and education.
Overall, the event was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and enlightened by Augustine’s insights and dedication to bridging the gap between Black culture and Catholicism.
