Debunking the Accusations Against King St. Louis IX: A Closer Look at the Saintly Monarch’s Life

The recent wave of statue demolitions and removals in the wake of the societal upheaval caused by the pandemic has brought into question the honoring of historical figures, including King St. Louis IX. The saintly Crusader king’s statue in St. Louis has come under attack by protestors who accuse him of “Islamophobia” and “anti-Semitism.” However, a closer look at the life and actions of King Louis IX reveals a man dedicated to his faith, his family, and his subjects.

Born in 1214, Louis IX became king of France at a young age and ruled with the guidance of his mother until he came of age. He was a devoted father to his eleven children, teaching them the Catholic Faith and emphasizing the importance of living a virtuous life. Louis was known for his charity towards the poor, founding hospitals and personally serving the hungry in his kingdom.

The accusations of “Islamophobia” against Louis IX stem from his participation in two Crusades aimed at liberating the Holy Land from Muslim occupation. However, in the context of the medieval world in which he lived, these actions were not motivated by hatred but by a sense of duty and love for his faith. Louis treated his enemies with respect, even negotiating his own release from imprisonment during his first Crusade.

Similarly, the charge of “anti-Semitism” against Louis IX fails to consider the historical context of his time. While he desired the conversion of Jews in his kingdom, he also recognized his duty to protect them as loyal subjects. His actions towards the Jewish people must be understood through the lens of his faith and the views of the medieval world, rather than through modern interpretations.

Despite his faults, King St. Louis IX was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church for his life of piety and sanctity. His example of devotion to God, charity towards others, and commitment to justice is worthy of emulation and certainly deserving of a statue in the city named after him. As society grapples with the honoring of historical figures, it is important to consider the full context of their lives and actions before passing judgment.
