Elmhurst University to Host Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Lecture on Cardinal John Henry Newman’s “The Idea of a University”
Elmhurst University is gearing up for an insightful and engaging event as it prepares to host the annual Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Lecture on April 30. This year, the focus will be on Cardinal John Henry Newman’s renowned work, “The Idea of a University,” exploring the essence of Catholic liberal education and its significance in academic and Christian life.
The lecture will feature a lineup of esteemed speakers from both the University community and the greater Catholic community, including Justin Reyes from the Diocese of Joliet, Elaine Fetyko Page from A.C. Buehler Library, and Mike Murray, the head football coach. Additionally, Elmhurst University trustee Joan Vilim, Department of English chair Nick Behm, and students from Fenwick High School and Elmhurst University will also share their insights on the topic.
Cardinal John Henry Newman, a prominent figure in English theology and academia, delves into the purpose and mission of a Catholic university in his book, emphasizing the importance of intellectual freedom and moral authority in education and faith. The lecture will serve as a platform for reflection and discussion on these key themes.
The Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Lecture, named in honor of the late Cardinal Bernardin of the Chicago Archdiocese, aims to promote intercultural dialogue and lifelong learning within the Elmhurst University community.
