Sacred Heart University Appoints Matthew Shields as Executive Director for Mission Integration

Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., has appointed Matthew Shields as the new executive director for mission integration. In his new role, Shields will be responsible for overseeing matters concerning SHU’s mission, campus ministry, and community engagement.

Shields, who previously served as the director for mission and ministry at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx, NY, brings a wealth of experience in working with students, faculty, and staff on volunteerism, spirituality, and mission integration. He has also served as a campus minister at William Paterson University in New Jersey, engaging students in service, self-awareness, and spiritual activities.

In an interview, Shields shared his goals for increasing student involvement in community service at Sacred Heart University. He emphasized the importance of building upon the existing programs and empowering students to make a difference in the local, regional, and global community.

When asked about the significance of community engagement at SHU, Shields highlighted the university’s commitment to social justice and educating students in mind, body, and spirit. He emphasized the importance of building relationships and partnerships with communities near and far, and the role of empathy, patience, compassion, and perseverance in this work.

Shields also discussed what attracted him to the position at Sacred Heart University, citing the university’s mission, vision, and innovative mindset as key factors. With his background in mission and ministry, Shields feels that coming to SHU is like a homecoming, allowing him to put his passion and studies into practice.
