Catholic University Celebrates Campus Sustainability Month with Green Initiatives
As October marks Campus Sustainability Month, Catholic University is leading the way in promoting environmental stewardship and green initiatives in higher education. With a long-term commitment to sustainability, the University has implemented various initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a more eco-friendly campus.
One of the standout achievements of Catholic University is the largest solar installation in the District of Columbia, providing clean energy to the campus. Additionally, the University purchases 100% of its electricity with Green e-Certificates, further supporting renewable energy sources.
Recognized as a Tree Campus USA, Catholic University has also achieved LEED certification for several buildings on campus, showcasing its dedication to energy efficiency and environmental design. Last year, the University announced its five-year Sustainability Plan, outlining ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions, energy consumption, waste, and water usage.
To celebrate Campus Sustainability Month, the Facilities Maintenance and Operations Department, along with other organizations, have organized a series of events and initiatives. These include a Campus Sustainability Walking Tour, the launch of a Waste Sorting Game for students, and educational sessions on environmental topics such as the BP Oil Spill and the Franciscan Monastery Garden.
In addition, the Sustainability Pledge has been introduced to encourage students, faculty, and staff to take simple steps towards environmental stewardship. By promoting energy conservation, sustainable food practices, water conservation, alternative transportation, and waste reduction, the pledge aims to engage the entire Catholic University community in creating a more sustainable campus.
With a strong focus on sustainability and a commitment to environmental leadership, Catholic University is setting an example for higher education institutions nationwide. By prioritizing green initiatives and promoting eco-friendly practices, the University is not only reducing its environmental impact but also inspiring future generations to prioritize sustainability in all aspects of campus life.
