Rebuilding and Healing: The Story of Vince and Margaret Sibbald in the Blue Mountains

Vince Sibbald and his late wife, Margaret, have a heartwarming story of resilience and community support in the face of tragedy. After their home was destroyed in the devastating bushfires that swept through the Blue Mountains in 2013, the couple found solace and assistance from Catholic Care Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

The Sibbalds, who have lived in Winmalee for 50 years, received not only financial support but also emotional and moral support from Catholic Care during their recovery. Vince shared that the organization became friends to them, providing the necessary counseling and encouragement to help them through the tough times.

As they rebuilt their home in Glenmore Park, the couple continued to stay connected to the Catholic community through the Drop-In Centre in Springwood. It was during this time that Margaret had a vision to create a community garden as a way to heal and reunite the community after the bushfires. With the help of Catholic Care, the Springwood Community Garden was born, featuring a permaculture food forest, worm farms, and garden beds for local schools and daycare groups.

Margaret’s dream of the community garden became a reality with the support of Catholic Care and the Diocese of Parramatta. Even after her passing in 2020, her legacy lives on in the garden, where two nashi pear trees were planted in her honor. The community garden continues to thrive, bringing people together and providing fresh, organic produce for all to enjoy.

Vince expressed his gratitude for the ongoing work of Catholic Care in the community, supporting those in need and fostering a sense of belonging and care for all. Despite his own health challenges, he looks forward to visiting the Drop-In Centre again and is thankful for the support and friendship he has received.

The story of the Sibbalds and the Springwood Community Garden is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another in times of need. Catholic Care’s dedication to helping those in need and fostering a sense of community shines through in their work with the Sibbalds and many others in the Blue Mountains area.
