Catholic Care Drop-In Centres: Providing a Safe Haven for the Lonely and Isolated in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains
Catholic Care Drop-In Centres in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains are providing a lifeline for those who are lonely and isolated. These centers have become a second home for many people, offering a safe and friendly place for assistance.
Celia Vagg, the Community Engagement Manager at Catholic Care, explains that these centers are welcoming places where people can connect with volunteers and feel a sense of dignity and respect. The overarching value of the organization is to embrace every journey with gratitude and love.
One such success story is Katie*, who turned to Catholic Care’s Aboriginal Catholic Services (ACS) in Emerton for help. Despite facing challenges such as drug and alcohol abuse, mental trauma, homelessness, and a criminal record, Katie found the support she needed to turn her life around.
ACS, located in one of the lowest socio-economic areas of Sydney with a large Indigenous population, offers a range of services including counseling and support groups. Indigenous staff members like Linda McDonald, a Gundungurra woman, play a crucial role in creating a comfortable and accepting environment for the community.
The All Saints of Africa Centre in Blacktown has been supporting African migrants and refugees in Western Sydney for almost a decade. The center provides a variety of services including support groups, homework help for children, and language support. Despite challenges during COVID, the center remained open to meet the individual needs of clients.
The Springwood Drop-In Centre, established after the 2013 bushfires in the Blue Mountains, focuses on mental health and social connection programs. The center offers a soft entry approach to support services, allowing anyone to come in for a chat and access resources. Volunteers like Sean Moylan provide valuable assistance, such as digital mentoring for older residents.
Looking ahead, Catholic Care plans to expand its services by converting Mamre House and Farm in Orchard Hills into another Drop-In Centre. With the support of generous donations and volunteers, the organization aims to continue providing welcoming places for people in need across the region.
To donate to the Bishop’s Good Samaritan Appeal and support Catholic Care’s efforts, individuals can visit the website or call the donation hotline. For those in need of assistance or interested in volunteering, contact information for Catholic Care is provided for easy access.
