Saintly Mothers: Examples of Faith and Devotion
The Church honors all types of mothers, from stay-at-home moms to working moms, widowed moms to moms who have lost their children. Each of these women, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, lived lives of exemplary faith in the face of whatever life threw at them. Here are six saints who were also mothers, each with their own unique story of devotion and love.
1. St. Monica: Known as the mother of St. Augustine, St. Monica prayed tirelessly for her son’s conversion and never gave up on her faith. She is the patroness of wives and abuse victims, as she endured trials with her pagan husband and his mother. Her efforts paid off, as both her husband and son converted to Christianity. St. Monica is a shining example of a mother who never gave up on her faith. Her feast day is August 27th.
2. St. Gianna Beretta Molla: A modern Catholic woman, St. Gianna was a physician who had a special affinity for mothers, children, the elderly, and the poor. She prioritized her family, refusing treatment that would harm her unborn child. St. Gianna’s impact on her family and the world is undeniable. Her feast day is April 28th.
3. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: The first American-born saint, St. Elizabeth had a motherly heart for all in need. After her husband’s death, she founded an order of religious in Baltimore to educate poor and orphaned children. Her impact on education in America is significant, but it is her motherly spirit that inspired devotion and conversion. Her feast day is January 4th.
4. St. Elizabeth: The cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary and mother of St. John the Baptist, St. Elizabeth was the first to recognize Jesus as Lord. She modeled openness and receptivity to Christ, passing this on to her son. Her feast day is November 5th.
5. St. Frances of Rome: Despite her desire to be a nun, St. Frances married and had six children. She faced ridicule and mockery from her family but remained devoted to God. Her love and faithfulness bridged unity in her family. Her feast day is March 9th.
6. St. Bridget of Sweden: A devoted wife and mother, St. Bridget had eight children who all survived into adulthood. Her generosity of spirit and faithfulness in raising her children make her extraordinary. Her feast day is July 23rd.
